Engineering methodology
Process and methodology
Electrical design begins with a load calculation based on the building's actual intended use, room by room appliance and lighting loads, HVAC demand, and any backup or EV charging requirements, rather than a generic point count. Distribution board and sub-panel locations are agreed with the architectural layout early, since retrofitting a panel location after walls are finished is disruptive and costly.
Installation and safety verification
Conduit and wiring installation follows the coordinated MEP drawing, checked against the plumbing and HVAC routes to avoid clashes. Before any wall closes over concealed wiring, we test continuity and insulation resistance, and before handover we verify load balancing across phases and confirm all safety devices, circuit breakers, earthing, surge protection, are correctly rated and functioning. Testing before handover goes beyond a simple check that switches and sockets work; we verify insulation resistance across circuits to confirm wiring integrity, check that residual current devices and circuit breakers trip correctly at their rated thresholds, confirm earthing resistance meets the applicable standard, and verify that load is reasonably balanced across the phases feeding the building, since an imbalanced load can cause uneven voltage and premature wear on connected equipment even when every individual circuit tests fine in isolation. We provide the client with a labelled distribution board and a wiring reference at handover, so that any future electrician working on the property, whether for a repair or an addition, can understand the existing layout quickly rather than having to trace circuits from scratch.
Scope
Scope of electrical infrastructure work
Exact inclusions are written into your agreement — this list shows the usual envelope.
- Load calculation and electrical design based on actual and projected demand
- Incoming supply connection coordination with the relevant electricity board
- Distribution board and sub-panel layout and installation
- Conduit routing and wiring coordinated with structural and architectural plans
- Lighting, power point and switch layout to the agreed design
- Backup power, inverter and generator integration where included in scope
- EV charging point provisioning where required
- Testing, load balancing and safety certification before handover
Scope note
We route conduits and plan distribution boards before walls are finished, coordinating closely with the plumbing and HVAC trades to avoid the routing clashes that are one of the most common, and most expensive to fix after the fact, construction coordination failures.
Material standards
Materials and standards
Grades and systems are specified — not left open-ended for site improvisation.
Wire gauge, switchgear brand and grade, and distribution board specifications are written into the project agreement based on the calculated load for that specific building, not a standard assumption carried over from a different project. Earthing systems are installed and tested per the applicable safety standard, since proper earthing is one of the most commonly under-specified items in budget electrical work.
Quality assurance
Quality checks for Electrical Infrastructure
Checks you should expect on a serious Bangalore site — colour alone never signals quality.
- Structural members match sanctioned drawings before pour
- Cover, curing and alignment checked at each RCC stage
- Wet-area and terrace waterproofing flood-tested where applicable
- MEP rough-in photographed before concealment
- Snag list closed before final handover
Common challenges
Common concerns and mistakes to avoid
Designing electrical load around current appliances without allowing for future air conditioning or EV charging needs
Under-sizing distribution boards to save a small upfront cost, forcing later upgrades
Skipping proper earthing installation or testing
Routing conduits without coordinating with plumbing and HVAC, causing clashes
Using unbranded or unrated switchgear that compromises safety and longevity
Professional warning
Safety, load capacity and future expansion are planned into the distribution design.

Electrical infrastructure: designing for the load a building will actually carry
Electrical work in a Bangalore home or commercial building has to account for far more load today than the same building type carried a decade ago, air conditioning in multiple rooms, larger kitchen appliances, EV charging points that did not exist as a design consideration until recently, and backup power systems that many households now treat as standard rather than optional. VDM Constructions designs electrical infrastructure around actual projected load rather than a generic point-count assumption, because an underground electrical system is exactly like an under-designed foundation: invisible until it fails, and expensive to fix once walls and finishes are in place.
This service covers electrical distribution design and installation for residential, villa and commercial construction, from the incoming supply connection through to the last switch point, including backup power integration.
Who this service is for
This service is relevant to clients building new, where electrical load planning needs to happen alongside structural and architectural design, to owners of existing properties whose electrical systems were designed for a different era of appliance use and now trip breakers or feel undersized, and to commercial clients whose electrical demand, server rooms, HVAC, higher lighting density, is meaningfully different from residential assumptions. It is also relevant to clients adding backup power systems, EV charging points or solar integration to an existing electrical layout.
Bangalore context for electrical infrastructure
Bangalore experiences periodic power interruptions that vary by locality and season, which is why backup power planning, inverters, generators, or increasingly solar with battery storage, has become close to a standard design consideration rather than an optional extra for many residential and commercial clients. Electrical load has also grown steadily as air conditioning adoption increases across the city, a shift from a decade ago when most homes were designed around ceiling fans and modest lighting loads; retrofitting older wiring for this level of load is a common and genuinely necessary upgrade rather than a luxury request. Coordination with BESCOM for new connections and any capacity upgrades is a standard part of our scope, and we plan for the documentation and timeline this coordination requires rather than treating it as guaranteed to move quickly.
Voltage fluctuation and periodic supply interruption are practical realities in parts of Bangalore, particularly during heavy monsoon weather when overhead lines can be affected, and this shapes our approach to surge protection and backup power integration. We specify surge protection devices at the main distribution board for sensitive electronic equipment, and where a client includes an inverter or generator in scope, we design the changeover and load-sharing arrangement so that backup power covers a sensibly chosen set of essential circuits rather than either the whole building, which is often uneconomical, or an ad hoc single socket, which is rarely adequate for a genuine outage.
Sizing a distribution board for the life of the building, not just the day it is switched on
A distribution board specified exactly to a building's electrical load on the day of handover, with little to no spare capacity, is a common and largely avoidable source of frustration a few years later, once a household adds a second air conditioning unit, an electric vehicle charger, or a kitchen appliance upgrade that the original design never anticipated. Every additional circuit needed beyond a board's original spare capacity typically means a panel replacement or a supplementary sub-panel, both more disruptive and expensive than simply specifying a board with reasonable headroom from the start. We size distribution boards and incoming supply capacity with a deliberate margin above calculated current load, informed by a conversation with the client about likely future additions, rather than matching capacity exactly to day-one requirements and leaving no room to grow.
This margin matters even more given how quickly Bangalore households have adopted air conditioning over recent years, a shift that has materially changed typical residential electrical load compared with a decade ago, when most homes were designed around fans and modest lighting circuits. A household that currently uses only fans but is likely to add air conditioning within a few years benefits significantly from wiring and panel capacity that anticipates that change now, while walls are open and access is easy, rather than retrofitting later through finished walls and ceilings. Electric vehicle charging is a similarly forward-looking consideration: even for clients who do not currently own an electric vehicle, provisioning a dedicated circuit and adequate panel capacity for a future charging point during original construction is a comparatively small cost addition, while adding it after finishes are complete usually requires new conduit runs through already-finished walls or an unsightly surface-mounted retrofit. We discuss these forward-looking allowances explicitly with every residential and villa client at the design stage, presenting the modest additional cost of extra capacity now against the considerably higher cost and disruption of a retrofit later, so the decision is made with full information rather than by default.
Timeline and cost factors
Electrical installation is sequenced with the overall construction schedule, typically running from rough-in during the structural and masonry stages through to final point installation during finishing works. Cost is driven by the total load being designed for, the number of points and circuits, backup power system capacity if included, and switchgear brand and grade, and we itemise these clearly since electrical scope is often underestimated in early budget conversations.
